Famekite / app teardown
How ReelShort turned 1-minute soap operas into ~$1B a year
Failed launch → ~$785M a year. Outside the top 1,000 → ahead of TikTok in US downloads.
ReelShort sells vertical soap operas one cliffhanger at a time. Its first version flopped. Three years later it made an estimated $785M in a year and is forecast to pass $1B in 2026. We did not work on ReelShort. We pulled apart the interviews, analyst reports, store listings and ad data to show how it works.
You’re getting the whole playbook:
- The pivot that turned a flop into a chart-topper
- The ad machine: why the episode is the ad
- The pricing and paywall that make a few viewers pay a lot
- The problems: 55 cents of every dollar goes back into ads
And yes: the parts you can copy for your own app, and where they break.
Whiteboard

What ReelShort actually is
It’s simple: a feature-length soap opera cut into 70 to 80 episodes of one to two minutes, shot vertically for your phone. The first few episodes are free. After that you pay per episode with coins or buy a weekly pass (Deadline).
The stories are werewolves, secret billionaires, mafia bosses, fake marriages and revenge. The titles say exactly what happens: Married for Green Card, Stayed for Love.
It’s run by Crazy Maple Studio, a San Francisco-founded company led by Joey Jia that started with a choose-your-story romance game called Chapters. China’s COL Group (中文在线) still owns 49.16% (COL investor disclosure).

The launch that failed, and the fix
ReelShort went live in August 2022 with translated Chinese micro-dramas. For months it sat outside the top 1,000 on both stores (GeekPark/36Kr).
“At first the app ‘failed’… We were focusing too much on the so-called character arc.” Joey Jia, CEO (Rolling Stone)
So they changed three things:
- US actors, shot in LA. Western settings, scripts adapted from popular English web novels.
- Simpler stories. “People aren’t ready to consume complex stories on their cellphones. Once we changed our strategy, everything started working” (Deadline).
- The “golden three” rule. Every series must land a hook inside the first three one-minute episodes. “If you don’t follow this specific formula, you will fail” (Rolling Stone).
Paid promotion officially started in June 2023, about ten months after launch (COL Group). A werewolf series, Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, went viral on TikTok. Most comments mocked it. It still brought in 1.5M new users (Rolling Stone).
The revenue timeline
These are Media Partners Asia estimates, not audited accounts (Deadline, Variety).
| Year | Revenue | Profit | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | $97M | n/a | Estimate |
| 2024 | $400M | Loss | Estimate |
| 2025 | $785M | ~$12M loss | Estimate |
| 2026 | $1.05B | ~$40M, first real profit | Forecast |
| 2028 | $1.7B | ~$225M | Forecast |
North America is 59% of revenue. Latin America and Asia-Pacific bring about 60% of users but only 19% of revenue (Variety).
The ad machine: the episode is the ad
Here’s where the money goes. Marketing and user acquisition ate about 55% of 2025 revenue (MPA via Deadline). On $785M, that’s roughly $430M (our calculation).
- Meta first. Facebook was the early channel and still gets heavy spend. Google and TikTok are growing faster (Crazy Maple VP, China Times).
- The ad is a real episode that stops on a cliffhanger, with “download to watch the rest”.
- Some ads run up to 20 minutes. ReelShort is among the producers uploading clips that long to Meta (Business Insider).
- Volume. About 8,100 Meta ads were live in the US in November 2023 (TechCrunch). One actor was told about 300 versions of her show’s ad were running (Business Insider).
“Facebook sucked me in with a little preview.” App Store review (App Store)
The owned channels
The YouTube channel has 18.6M subscribers and 4,600 videos of full-episode compilations (YouTube, observed). Big shows get their own TikTok account, and captions say “search 961546 in the app”: a trackable code that works without a link.
What one series costs
- Cost per series: about $60K in the early days, now $250K to $300K (CEO, Deadline).
- Speed: 60 to 90 episodes shot in 7 to 10 days (Filmustage).
- Volume: 5 to 6 new local series a week in early 2026, up from 1 or 2 (China Times).
- Hits are rare. Across the industry, only 2% of 1,200 tracked series passed 100M views (Business Insider / Owl & Co.).
- In-house wins. 90%+ of revenue comes from its ~600 own titles, not the ~4,000 licensed ones (Deadline).
Scripts are built around marketing hooks. One director called them “very meticulous from a marketing standpoint in terms of what is going to hook the audience”.
Pricing and the paywall
One episode costs 60 coins, about $0.30 to $0.57 depending on the pack. Bigger packs add more bonus coins: 5% at $4.99, 100% at $99.99 (ReelPulse).
- Weekly VIP on iPhone: $19.99 a week (App Store, observed). On the web it’s $11.99 for the first week, then $14.99, because the web skips Apple’s cut (ReelPulse).
- Subscriptions are already 60 to 70% of what viewers pay (MPA via Variety).
- Free coins from daily check-ins and rewarded ads keep non-payers coming back.
“Several million people might watch episodes for free until they hit the paywall, but less than a hundred thousand will make it to the end, forking over something like $30 to $40.” A drama producer (AdExchanger)
Where each revenue dollar went
In 2025 ReelShort lost about $12M on $785M of revenue (MPA via Deadline). The plan to fix that:
- Telco bundles in Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore and Indonesia bring subscribers with “almost no acquisition cost”.
- A web store that skips the 30% app-store fee.
- In-app ads, where 65 to 70 cents of each dollar reaches earnings.
MPA forecasts marketing falling from 55% to 44% of revenue by 2028 (Variety).
The real problems
- Ad dependency. When an Apple Search Ads burst ended in 2023, downloads fell (TechCrunch).
- Pricing backlash. “$20 per week… after a month would cost more than HBO Max, Netflix, Hulu, Disney+ and Paramount Plus combined” (TechCrunch). Google Play rating: 3.8, against 4.7 on iPhone.
- TikTok’s PineDrama, free with no ads, sits at #2 in US Entertainment. ReelShort is #20 (TechCrunch, Apple chart observed 14 Oct 2026).
- Unions. SAG-AFTRA launched a Verticals Agreement in October 2025 (Deadline).
- Misleading ads. One promo cut to a sex scene that isn’t in the show; actors were told third parties made it (Business Insider).
- A slowing US. Category app-store revenue grew only 20% year on year in Q1 2026 (Sensor Tower).
What you can copy, and where we help
| What ReelShort did | Where Famekite helps |
|---|---|
| Ads that are clips of the product’s peak moment, ending on an open loop | Clipping agency |
| Hundreds of variants per concept; kill losers fast | Paid-social ad creative |
| Long ads (2 to 5 minutes) tested beside 15-second hooks | Paid ads management |
| A TikTok account per show, with trackable search codes | Clipping agency |
| Recurring faces that become the app’s “cast” | UGC and influencer content |
| Literal titles: “if it’s too literary, nobody will understand” | App store optimization |
Final takeaway
ReelShort didn’t win on taste. It won because it wrote the hook formula down, made the product its own ad, and kept testing. The weak spot is the same one most apps have: rented attention. If you copy the creative machine, build the owned channels from day one.
